Binkley Discovers the BENDing benCH
Recently, Michelle and I were walking in the downtown core of Vancouver, and we came upon a curious sight. What at first appeared like a small pile of discarded wood, turned out to be something quite different. It was the Bending Bench. It is 37.5 foot long malleable social space, made up of nine sections that are hinged together. The creators tout that its ability to pivot means that it can adapt to different sites and seating arrangements. It was made by Studio Camp in partnership with VIVA Vancouver and the Vancouver Tool Library. The pieces of the Bending Bench …
Granite Bowl Sink
I came home from work the other night, and voila! – there on the kitchen counter was Michael’s latest creation. I am so spoiled. He carved a large granite boulder into a sink for our guest bathroom renovation which should be done sometime this spring. We had discussed colour palette and “look and feel” of the bathroom. I said to Michael; “well really you SHOULD carve the sink before we source out a cabinet, colours textures, right?”. And he did. I’ll keep you in the loop and refer back to this post when the renovation is under way. All I …
My New Favourite Design App – Houzz.com
A few weeks ago, we upgraded our iPhone and spent the evening updating contact lists and calendars (all the boring stuff). Then came the fun stuff – we started looking for fun and new apps. Aside from the standard solitaire and word search, we came across an design app recommended by our friend, Lynne. The app is called Houzz.com (yes – they have a website too!) and it is an archive of over 200K+ pictures of interior and exterior designs. It’s like looking through a stack of virtual design magazines and getting ideas or inspiration. You can categorize by interior …
Lounge Chair Celebrates a Late Summer
Since we are experiencing a late summer this year in Western Canada, we’re still out enjoying the sunshine here in Vancouver. The beaches, lawns and pools are awash in bodies seeking to change the Spring rust to Summer tan. In the spirit of the sun, I found an interesting lounge chair designed for the pool deck. It’s called the Splash Lounge Chair, by industrial designer Michael L. Wendel and it emulates a splash on the surface of a glass of milk. When one sits in it, one becomes the drop that has caused the splash! Mr. Wendel describes his creation …
Little Design Company in Vancouver
The other day a friend of mine called and asked to take me to one of her favourite design studios in Vancouver. We bundled up on a cold and windy west coast morning to “The Little Design Company”, located off Davie Street in the West End. The studio is cozy and succinct with not much room to swing a cat, but the visual eye candy was immediate and big in mood and feel. The studio is owned and run by Rose Albrecht, a woman passionate for all things unique. Her goal is to repurpose and recycle older, vintage furniture and …
