The Fallacy of Public Art Pt. 4 – Adding Insult to Injury

I have written several posts on why I feel Public Art Programs are a farce. I call the series, The Fallacy of Public Art, and there is Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Here, I illustrate four examples of public art competitions from which I’ve been rejected, and then to add insult to injury, the “artist” or “artist team” who was selected proceeded to contact me to create their proposal. In 1995, I was rejected from an open call competition to create an art work for the newly completed sport arena for the Vancouver Grizzlies basketball team. Bear in …

Art in the Garden 2013 a Success

Michelle and I are pleased to report that our exhibition of sculpture at the Art in the Garden tour 2013 was very successful. I spent all day on Friday hauling the sculptures from our gallery and sculpture garden to the wonderful garden designed by Rudi Pinkowski at his son’s West Vancouver waterfront mansion. The biggest piece I took was “Adrift in Veiled Gesture”. In consultation with Rudi, I was able to curate the show so that each sculpture was tastefully exhibited, yet did not harm any of the plantings. Invitation to Binkley Sculpture Exhibition

I will be participating in the Art in the Garden Tour this year, but I will be showing my sculptures in a West Vancouver, BC, Canada waterfront garden. I’m excited to unveil a new series of sculptures, inspired by the garden designed by Rudi Pinkowski and located at his son’s mansion on Bellevue Avenue. Against this backdrop, I’ll be exhibiting original sculptures in marble, granite and limestone, reflective …

Binkley Show in West Vancouver Waterfront Garden

I will be showing my sculptures in a different location during this year’s Art in the Garden Tour. As the new Low Level Road and Richardson International grain terminal expansion projects are in full swing in our back yard, we did not feel comfortable hosting you all at our sculpture garden. The noise, dust and ugliness do not make for a welcoming environment. But the North Vancouver Community Arts Council has graciously offered to let me exhibit a new collection of sculptures in the garden of a lovely West Vancouver waterfront mansion. The garden was designed by Rudi Pinkowski, and …

Start with Art Opening

The Start with Art opening was a great evening. This annual exhibition is presented by the Seymour Art Gallery in Deep Cove, BC, Canada. Emerging and established artists are invited to exhibit a piece of their work, but it must retail for $150.00 or less. The exhibition is designed for patrons under-sixteen years of age, and the artwork is displayed low for the younger eyes to appreciate. The above is a shot at the opening. When I snapped this, there were several children in the gallery, but you only see their parents. That is because every community art gallery must …
